Annotated Bibilographies
In the Mentorship Programme at Rosebud School of the Arts, the students are required to do Bibliographies on scripts, performances, books, and other forms of art that we found evocative. This part of my education has helped my ability to articulate grow tremendously. The following documents are examples of my writing from a couple year in the Mentorship Programme.
In my last year of the Mentorship Programme, as a student, I am required to choose a particular field of art that speaks to us, whether it’s the role of female artists in show business or Absurdism. I wasn’t sure what I was going to pick for a long time until this past summer. I was cleaning bathrooms at the inn here in town and had just had a negative encounter with a patron who did not agree with the staging of Cotton Patch Gospel. She missed the presence of the cross and she seemed upset about it. However, after the short conversation, I had a deep longing that she would be open to seeing the purpose of why a mail bag was used instead of the cross and that it still meant the same thing: it was the ultimate physicalization of God’s love for us. And then the words of Anne Frank came to mind so quickly: “I still believe, in spire of everything , that people are really good at heart”.
That’s exactly what I want to colour my art with. I want to leave people in the audience with the hope and faith in humanity that the human race will choose to be the better person and live with integrity and courage. Now, will I find that message in every play? Of course not. But I will say this, I will try to choose stories as an artist that show this hope, this faith, and ultimately, that much love. It may be a big idea but in my experience, it makes life a little more worth while, even through the hardships. I think Ms. Frank was on to something and I’m going to gonna choose to live the same way.
Here are a few bibliography entries that express my passion for hopeful theatre (Mentorship Programme: Year 3):
