Chickens: The Musical

I was able to play a role in the summer of 2014 that I never thought I would be excited about: a Chicken. Lucia Frangione, a graduate of Rosebud School of the Arts, wrote a play tailored to rural Alberta life and Lewis Frere, Royal Sproule, Jason Bertsch, and Mark Lewandowski wrote music to fit it perfectly. Chickens: The Musical opened May 30, 2014 and closed August 30, 2014. The production was directed By Royal Sproule, who originally played “His Nibs”. That means I did about 84 shows squatting, pecking, and hawking. It was the most physically demanding show I have ever done but the most fun I’ve even had.

I played a chicken named Butterball. She is a feisty, prize winning hen and her eggs are dying. Butterball has taught me what it feels like to be a woman, which was something I was terrified of. She has taught me that I have strength in who I am and with patience, good things come around. I felt so blessed to be in the show with an all-star cast and crew.  This play may sound like just a comedy but it has a ton of heart and a theme of persevering love.

“Royal Sproule has discovered that chicken really can fly or at least the theatrical ones can.”

I was nominated for a Critter because of Butterball. A Critter is an award that the Calgary Theatre Critics, Stephen Hunt, Louis B. Hobson, and Jenna Shummoogum nominate an actor/actress for the good work they'e done in a show. I did win but I had such a nice time with some good friends who were also nominated from Rosebud. I was grateful for the nomination and will continue to work as hard in any role.
