Four Generations
When I turned 25, I bought two presents for myself: a filing cabinet and this china cabinet. I love it because it looks like an old medicine cabinet from the 50s. It houses china that has been passed down to me from my Great Great Grandmother.
My Great Grandma was born in 1920 and turns 98 this July. She's feisty and she'll tell you exactly what she thinks. She married a strong, patient man with integrity. A few years into her married life, her house burnt down and the community showered her family with household essentials and love. One of the things her mother gave her was a set of china.
My Grandma was married in 1963 to an intelligent man with a great deal of integrity. I mentioned before that they are farmers who have a legacy of kindness and an open home. They are best friends and they see someone they know everywhere they go. She too was given china as a wedding gift and a few bits are in this cabinet.
My mother was married in 1984 to a gentle man who also is filled with integrity. They built a home out of love and are too driven by kindness. I look into their china cabinet and I see so many stories. Think of all the meals that have been shared on these plates and how much coffee have been poured into the cups! The theme imprinted on these sets of china is community.
I moved from a small apartment into a basement suite and I was ecstatic for more room! Four generations of china live in this cabinet and it was such a shame to keep it boxed up. It makes me think of when the four of us (Great Grandma, Grandma, Mom, and I) would go out for lunch and share stories of what we've experienced over the years. Today, as I drink my coffee, I'm remembering how special those moments were and not taking them for granted.
Love & Prayers,
Lauren xo
