Brooklyn Blue
I don’t wear this hat because I’m a huge baseball fan or because Brooklyn is where Steve Rogers (Captain America) is from. I wear it because the Brooklyn Dodgers did something incredible in 1947 that made them the first and that first made history.
Jackie Robinson was an African-American baseball player who was a big presence on and off the field. He was as strong as an ox, could get into any pitcher's head and was a man of unquestionable character. Needless to say he made every baseball game exciting. He was scouted by Branch Rickey, a Christian man who wanted to win. And he knew that Jackie could help him with that. Jackie was signed to the Brooklyn Dodgers after some time playing for the Montreal Royals in 1947. He wore a Dodgers jersey for 10 years, surviving the violent ridicule and changing the world by playing the game he loved. And he was good at it.
The cap that I'm wearing is called " '47 MVP Cap". My Mom and Dad raised me to understand that everyone put their pants on the same way, one leg at a time. So the idea of racial superiority doesn't make any sense to me. Yes, I was raised in Southern Alberta, but it shouldn't matter where I grew up. Jackie Robinson overcame the world by not hurting it or conforming to it.
It sounds like someone else I know (Jesus). So the next time you put on your ball cap, fedora, or whatever the heck you wear, what story are you telling? I plan to communicate that I believe in equality and I'm going to do it wearing that Brooklyn Blue. Happy Jackie Robinson Day!
Love & Prayers,
Lauren xo
