Sewing With Sentiment

I had the pleasure of spending a weekend with my grandparents out in the country and I had a few ideas to spice up some clothing that I had bought online. Of course, my ideas seem so simple but at the end of the day took a lot of work.

My Grandma is a terrific sewer and worked patiently with me, instructing me on the best way to get the look I wanted. We laughed like we haven't in years. It was so delightful. I asked her why she started sewing, "My mom always had some fabric lying around and the sewing machine was right there, so I figured it would be a good idea. I took Home Ec 30, you know, we made a full tailored suit." My mouth nearly dropped. She knew what she was doing and that's putting it lightly.

I've thought about why I buy my clothes instead of making them and it's less expensive to buy them instead of making them. It was not always this way.  I think of all the beautiful dresses that the women wore in the 1940s and 50s and a lot of them were homemade. My mother is also a beautiful sewer. From both of them, I have gained the knowledge of seeing where things can be added to an article of clothing to make them mine. I long to pass this on to my kids and make clothing for them too. I found material at Value Village that is to die for and I plan to make my first dress from it. Hopefully it goes well. I promise to keep ya'll posted!

Love & Prayers,
