Remembrance Day & A Dear Friend

A few of my Great Grandfather's fought in the first world war and the second world war. My Grandpa (my Dad's Father) fought in Indonesia and brought over the food and culture that my family still enjoys today. The war brought so much pain and grief with that much violence and devastation. But thank you to them, we have freedom.
My Grandma (my Dad's mom) can remember people in the Netherlands cutting their hands on tin cans because they were so hungry. She has an impeccable memory for history and details. She and my Grandpa came over to Canada in 1953 seeking solace and sanctuary. That's what Canada offered: help and rescue to those in need and a fresh start for those who needed a clean slate.
I went over to the Netherlands when I was 13 and the moment they found out my family was from Canada, they faces lit up because the Canadian Troops helped their country. We were friends. I will never forget what those brave men did for the Dutch people and for my freedom as well.

There's another person I wanted to celebrate today. Her name is Kelsey. She's the one I've focused in on in the photo above. We had the pleasure of spending some time in California with a few of our other friends last January. She's brilliant. Completely dialled in to reading the room and challenging everyone to be their best and most truthful self. It's her birthday today.
Kelsey, you're one of my dearest friends. I'm so grateful for the way you push me to be better, being aware of the circumstance around me, and how I fit into it. You're stunning and selfless. I pray the Lord bless you with the greatest surprises this year. This is your year. May your adventures be big and your smiles be bigger.
Love & Prayers,
Lauren xo
